Susan Harris is an artist based out of the greater Piedmont area of North Carolina, more specifically Jamestown. Her art instruction began at an early age under the late Frances Kendall of Whiteville, North Carolina, although her love of art, as any child’s might, began much earlier. This instruction was continued through four years of high school in Radford, Virginia, and through it she developed a love for different mediums such as pottery; sculpture; stained glass; charcoal and pencil; jewelry; and painting in oil, acrylic and watercolor. She enjoys the thrill of experimenting with various textures, mediums, and methods to find new ways of expressing herself through art.

For a number of years it became necessary that art should take a back seat to other things, such as working in the corporate world, home-educating her children and caring for her elderly parents. But eventually what took her away would lead her back; and what began as a method of coping with a family loss and filling the time left open by her children’s graduations became something more, something that began to awaken creativity and the need, once again, to express herself through art.

In March of 2005, after months of messes on the kitchen table and the back porch, her husband, John, helped her set up a studio in their Jamestown home, where she now spends much of her time. Her current preferences are for acrylics and mixed media on canvas, as well as making her “garden jewelry” and custom note cards.

If you were to ask for her inspiration, she would say, as anyone who creates something concrete to express something vague might: everything becomes an experiment with hundreds of gifts and lessons along the way.
